Command Hooks: A Moveable Way To Hang Things On Your Walls

One of the best ways to organize many items is to hang them up on the wall with hooks.

However, in the past once you put up a hook it was there to stay, making a hole in whatever you mounted it on, and if you later decided you wanted to move something, or that you wanted to make a change, too bad. The hook was still there.

One of the most innovative home organization products to come out in recent years has been these adjustable, removable hooks from 3M. You don't need to use nails, screws, tape, or search for studs to keep these on the wall, but instead it comes with special adhesive strips which are removable and movable.

The secret is in the special adhesive and way it is mounted, which is very easy to do. Here are picture instructions for how it works:

Tips For Use Of The 3M Command Hooks

The pictured product above is actually how it looks once it is installed. However, there are several varieties and sizes available. You need to keep in mind what you want to hang, and also where you want to hang it, before you purchase these so you make the right choice.

The most basic of the hooks are the white plastic, but there are also wire and brushed nickel varieties you can choose from if you want something that looks a little nicer.

The more important consideration is the weight of what you are hanging. Although the smaller hooks are less conspicuous they also just don't hold as much weight. For example, the smallest hooks only hold half a pound, the medium hooks hold up to 3 pounds, the large hooks hold up to 5 pounds, and the jumbo hooks hold up to 7 1/2 pounds.

Please note that these command hooks are not meant to hold really heavy stuff, like a bicycle or other heavy items. If you want to do that, you need to use more traditional hooks or wall organizers that are attached to the studs for support, so the weight of the object doesn't pull it out of the wall.

Velcro strips great for hanging pictures
by: Donna

They also make the Command strips with Velcro that are great for picture hanging. The wall gets a Velcro strip and the picture gets a Velcro strip. It makes those little adjustments so easy. It is also great for hanging a collage of pictures.

No holes in the wall!
by: Heather

We use these for everything. I love the picture ones. All the pictures in our house are hung with these. I also use them in the kids room to put things at their height. Now I can move them up as they get taller without having to fill holes in the wall.
