There are so many different fragrances that you can create that after you begin, you may wonder why you constrained yourself to the limited amount of fragrances found in commercial air fresheners.

Learning how to make air fresheners can take some practice and experimentation, however, because the process requires you to mix various fragrances together, and eash person's tastes are so unique it really is a trial and error process until you hit upon the combination, or combinations, you and your family enjoy and appreciate, versus those that make you turn up your nose.

There are two ways to make natural air fresheners for your home, and these are using essential oils, or creating potpourri.

This article discusses using essential oils for how to make air fresheners.

Using Essential Oils To Make Your Own Air Fresheners

Ingredients:

  • 1/4 cup rubbing alcohol (also known as isopropyl alcohol)
  • 1 cup distilled water
  • Approximately 20 drops of a combination of 1-3 essential oils of your choice

Directions:

Step 1: In a 12 ounce spray bottle combine the alcohol and essential oils, and shake well to disperse the oil throughout the alcohol.

Step 2: Next, add the distilled water and shake again, dispersing the alcohol into the water. (You may need to shake for 1-2 minutes.)

Hint: Do not try to combine these steps together, and add the essential oils directly into the water. As you know, oil and water do not mix, so that is why you must first combine the alcohol and oil together before adding the water.

Step 3: Let the mixture rest for a couple of days, and then use as needed.

Hint: An essential oil homemade air freshener is quite strong, so you don't need to spray very much at all to freshen the room. One small spritz should be more than sufficient, or the room will become overpowered with the smell.

What Combination Of Essential Oils Should I Try?

I know that the ingredients listed above are quite vague -- approximately 20 drops of 1-3 different essential oils.

The reason for this is that each person has their own tastes about what smells good and bad to them, and there are so many combinations you can try that it would be impossible to try to list them all.

Helpful hints for choosing include:

  • Do not combine more than three scents, or the blend will most likely not be to your liking.
  • Choose one scent as the main scent, using the most drops of it, and then choose one to two other scents as lesser accompanying notes to your main fragrance.
  • Until you know what combination you like buy only small quantities of various essential oils so you don't waste your money if a scent is not to your liking.

Below I have listed some popular essential oil frangrances for creating natural air fresheners. This is, by no means, an exhaustive list of recommendations for essential oils, but hopefully it will give you guidance for those that many other people also enjoy in their homes.
